Maggie Sottero Closes Otis College Runway Show
Maggie Sottero announces the successful runway presentation of upcycled bridal designs curated through the junior and senior mentorship program at Otis College of Art and Design’s Fashion Design department. These unique designs were unveiled at a special showcase event called O-Launch, held annually at Otis College.
Students presented their creations on the runway to their peers, their families, Otis staff, the Otis Board of Trustees, creative directors from mentor brands, and numerous leaders from the art, design, and film world. The full runway showcased projects from esteemed mentors such as Mike Amiri, Revolve, J. Crew, Katherine Ross/LACMA, Blizzard Entertainment, Bleu/Rod Beattie, and Marcus Clayton, culminating with a
finale by Maggie Sottero.
The theme of the O-Launch fashion show was "The Art of Duality." Maggie's story, inspired by forms in nature and filled with light and balletic gestures, was positioned directly after a presentation of the Blizzard Entertainment project, which featured dark, dramatic pieces inspired by their game "Diablo." The junior students' bridal party ensembles were presented first, featuring unexpected shapes and whimsical details and designed for wearability beyond the wedding weekend. The senior students' showstopping bridal gown designs, a study of shape, proportion, and dramatic embellishment, finished the story. The senior design winners were Megan Dangcil and Trang Phan, and the junior winner was Ada Zhang.
Innovative Collaboration Transforms and Reimagines Gowns
“This project opened everyone’s eyes in terms of what is possible for designing garments,” said Megan, a senior winner. “A lot of the time, people think there’s no way you can make something this extravagant by using deadstock. Being able to break through and show people that we created these designs using already made gowns, making something that is totally unique and different”.
“We are thrilled to have worked with Otis College on this inspiring runway event,” said Kelly Midgley, CEO and Creative Director at Maggie Sottero. “Sustainability is a core value at Maggie Sottero, and working with such talented and passionate students to explore new ways of thinking about bridal fashion has been incredibly rewarding. This runway show highlights their exceptional skills and reinforces the importance of sustainable practices in the fashion industry.”
